Allergic to ... France

We are nothing if not scientific, and that is really the only logical conclusion to be drawn from two indisputable facts:

A) French wines give Foodgoat a splitting headache, previously attributed to sulfites and compounded by Francophile snobbery, and ...

B) French beer (namely, the Kronenbourg 1664) gives Foodgoat a throbbing headache.

I expected French beer to be dark and earthy, but the Kronenbourg was light, very light - like an American beer. It tasted fine, but not long after finishing off a bottle, the French allergy symptoms would start to manifest themselves. Headache and a general nauseous feeling that would last til morning.

Clearly, Foodgoat is allergic to France.

  1. Please don't judge French beers by Kronenbourg. That's like judging American beer by Budweiser. Or all American cheese by Kraft singles. Try to find some French crafty ales. You'll probably like them.

  2. So it's a safe bet that there will be no French champagne at the wedding. Oui?

  5. Roselle,
I apologize about contacting you through a post, but I couldn’t find an alternate way to reach you. My name is Simon and I am working with USA Rice on their 2007 recipe contest. I was hoping to talk to you about your blog, the kind of information you like to receive from public relations professionals and if you ever post information about contests. Our entry deadline is fast approaching (April 15!) and with short notice I don’t expect anything, but I would like to talk to you more. I am new to the blogging scene and would love any information you could share about your site, what you like to receive and how I can work as a resource for you.

I look forward to hearing from you soon,

Sounds like migraines to me. I have similar reactions to some wines and beers, but cannot pin it on a country of origin.

Pfff Allergy to France? To the country of Ignorance, where people think that Amsterdam is a country in Denmark? American ignorance causes allergy. Americans can learn an aweful lot about sophistication from Europeans, and not just in food. Besides, without Europeans, the US would not even exist.

Patrick, without the US, France would no longer exist.

  9. Hey Patrick- it’s pretty stupid to believe a whole country is filled with Ignorant people.

If you feel your geography is better than this American let me know, and I will happily show how "bad" this American's knowledge of the world.

As for me being allergic to french wines/booze- it must be something they add over there. I really want to love French wines, but when it tastes like a chemical and give me headaches - it’s hard to love.
Anyways- I am a fan of CA wines now ;)

    Hey Patty- Think FAST -
    Point to Kazakhstan ..

    Doh that's Uzbekistan... try again

a comment like: "I expected French beer to be dark and earthy" is idiotic, I am sorry to say. Its like going to the middle of the woods and saying "I thought America had more buildings", Obviously there is a great variety of beer in france, light, dark, earthy, malty, good, bad... just like there is anywhere.... including America, where a great deal of excellent complex beer is produced. the conclusion should be that you drank a shitty beer from france that reminded you of a shitty beer from the USA, rather than your conclusion that french beer is shitty, just like american beer. Equally silly is your notion that french wines give you a headache.... The french wines that give you a headache give you a headache. (By the way, I am allergic to france as well)

  11. Idiotic? Silly??

Anyways, I think people are missing the point. I have nothing against France (you are just assuming that because I am an American: I am anti-French - I AM NOT!!!) I actually like France a lot. Just for some unknown reasons (to me): when I drink a French wine (or in this case a beer) my head feels like it’s about to explode like Eta Carinae. It has nothing to do with the price/quality of the wine. I shunned all wines for years because of this. It was only after many trials did I figure out the only common factor was the origin of the wine was the cause of my mind-splitting headaches.

Now, I am enjoying wines from other parts of the world. It’s a pity I can’t enjoy a French wines because I know they must taste wonderful. But that’s life- at least I can enjoy Spanish peanuts on top of my ice-cream sundays [poor Ladygoat].
