Blog Posts Worth Reading

  • There is something to be said - a lot to be said, actually - about why more meat is not always better. Case in point: Foodgeekery tries the latest KFC abomination - the Double Down Chicken Sandwich (via Lead Paint Cookbook, which has his own awesome reaction).

GoatSpawn Blogs Again

Nine weeks to go, and the big question is: am I a boy or a girl? Nobody knows!

Some people thought it was a good idea to keep my gender a surprise, and some people seem to be annoyed and frustrated by the suspense. Some have strong convictions of one side or the other, but an informal poll is pretty evenly split.

Did diet have anything to do with this? According to old wives tales, women who eat more meat and salty foods get a boy, while those who eat more sweets and desserts get a girl. New research also suggests that a higher calorie intake around the time of conception, with its higher quantity and wider range of nutrients, is linked to boys. There was also a strong correlation between women eating breakfast cereals and sons.

So what was Ladygoat eating around January?

In other news, to pass the time, I've been trolling the web. Here's some stuff I found:
cat
from I Can Haz A Cheezburger, courtesy of my soon to be uncle PJ ...

and an alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell of bacon ... by actually cooking a piece of bacon by two halogen lamps. Delicious!

Seen recently online ....

... a 1960's ad for rice

You know what would be unexpected for Foodgoat? If I made dinner ever. At least a dinner that did not involve dumping something out a cardboard box into a bowl and pouring milk over it.

... Food-themed baby costumes

GoatSpawn, I promise never to dress you up as the main course. (I will also avoid the other 19 baby products great for traumatizing infants).

However, I make no promises regarding squid costumes.

Can I Get A Napkin Please?

I do not generally associate food courts with delightful dining experiences, but then I wasn't lucky enough to be one of the unwitting customers for this hilarious and totally awesome improv-infiltrated food court musical.

Here are the two food-related ones out of the 10 creepiest old ads ...

I've been in a funk since my airline experience. All that stale plane air must have stifled my brain.

Fortunately, yesterday I encountered three things that cheered me up.

The first was the Britney Spears noodle bra on eBay.

The second was the odd looking plant in my backyard that has turned out to be a broccoli. Woo hoo!

And the third was watching MacHomer at the Hanna Theater, a one-man vocal spectacular features impressions of over 50 voices from TV`s The Simpsons in a performance of Shakespeare`s Macbeth. The performer, Rick Miller, was a weird, funny nut - his Marge (as Lady MacHomer) was spot on, and the puppets were great. I felt bad that there were only about 20 people there, so if you're in the Cleveland area, check out the show (it's playing until Sunday) - any Shakespeare fan especially would enjoy the irreverent rendition.

We thought about having doughnuts and beer in honor of Homer prior to the performance, but instead settled on a quick meal, surrounded by college kids, at the Rascal House.

The pizza was unremarkable but the fries were surprisingly good - extra crispy, not too salty, hot, and most importantly, contained in a snazzy french fry cup.

Alas, I hadn't been fully cheered up for half an hour before we found that the computer REFUSES TO TURN ON. What!? No connection to the Internet, to the outside world? Wait ... NO WARCRAFT??!!

Noooooooooooooo!

Foodblog linkiness

-One of my fondest memories is of waking up my very first morning in the Philippines in 1987 to the smell of freshly delivered pan de sal, which turned out to be the BEST BREAD EVER. Still oven hot, with a litttle cheddar cheese from a can, so yummy. It all came back reading Market Manila wax poetic about her own pan de sal memories.

-One of the most vexing problems of my recent life is finding a convenient way to use loose tea at work instead of tea bags. Why not just stick with tea bags? Pim patiently explains why loose tea rules.

-The always hysterical Impulsive Buy reviews McDonald’s Premium Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich and finds that "premium" and "McDonald's" really don't belong in the same phrase.

-Bitter Greens seeks to rescue us from our paranoid fear of dirt. Since I've started to compost, I developed a great fondness for dirt and an admiration for decomposition. Food should not come in sterile plastic wrap and styofoam.

Is My Blog Burning? #14: Orange you hungry?

This dish is brought to you by the color ORANGE

Food being an aesthetic experience as well as a tasty one, in this April round of that Is My Blog Burning?, sponsored by we us here at Foodgoat, I put out the call far and wide to bloggers of all stripes to whip up a little something in the orange hue. Many of my favorite foods fall in this lovely, lively range of the spectrum. Not just orange the fruit, but among the foods coming in one orange shade or another are sweet potatoes, butternut squashes, various cheeses, paprika-spiked chicken paprikash, macaroni and cheese, certain peppers ... but enough about me, what dishes come up orange for you?

Post your orange-colored recipe on Sunday, April 24 (prime time to bust out the digital camera too) and email me your link at ladygoat@yahoo.com so I can include you in my summary. Orange you excited? I am.

-Someone has to say it: The Real Gilligan's Island reality show rocks. It's hilarious. But that's one touched-up picture of Donna on the website.

-If you go on a world food tour, don't gross out the world.

-You could start by not posting photo records like this: eating an In-N-Out 20x20. That's 20 patties, 20 slices of cheese, folks.

-Remember the grilled cheese Virgin? Now there's a fish stick Jesus. If I can just get a St. Joseph pickle and some 3 wise men fries, I've got this year's Nativity set and lunch.

-Even Romans needed rest stops. They didn't have Taco Bell, but Roman families on their way to GladiatorLand did stop for
"... a lot of meat - chicken and pork - as well as bread, rice, lentils and fruit. There were desserts of sweet cakes, cooked with sesame seeds and almonds."
-Not that we don't have enough to be paranoid about, but the EPA found rocket fuel in nationwide samples of milk and lettuce.

-Hershey's Kisses now come in 7, count 'em, 7 varieties, including dulce de leche and rich dark. Is dulce de leche the new black? 'Cuz I'm okay with that.

food news of the weird

Foodgoat can't do it all. Sometimes, we don't want to. Here are food adventures where even I fear to tread.

Fairy shows you, step by artery-clogging step, in Technicolor, exactly how to make fried Oreos. Yes, fried Oreos. I love me my Oreos, but I can't get myself to even think about trying this. You can, though. (via MeFi)

Mercifully, there are no pictures of Gael Cooper's MSNBC reviews of some of the 42 foods on a sticks served at the Minnesota State Fair. Not only the usual corn dogs, but deep-fried candy bars, pickles, Reubens (!), chocolate-covered bananas, etc. Personally, I'd rather try the deep-fried ch-ch-cherry bombs from the scent of green bananas.

Football season has started! Not only does this return to Foodgoat the will to live, but it also revives the perenniel turducken conversations. But if you talk the talk, you must walk the walk, and the Black Table shows you the gameplan for preparing John Madden's great culinary contribution, the chicken inside the duck inside the turkey. Personally, I find the whole concept rather fowl.

And then there is a whole slew of winners at Recipes of the Damned: Real scary recipes from real scary vintage cookbooks. Scary, indeed. Here's a brief list, just to whet your appetite.
Beef Tea
Simmered Brains
Deep Fried Field Rat
(from learning the lessons of nixon)
If that doesn't deter you, there's always Utterly Outrageous Recipes, which features Chocodogs, Cheddar Coffee, and Cricken Cookies.

I'm not a particular fan of the Taco Bell Chili Cheese Burrito (I'm not a particular fan of Taco Bell in general, and their Grade D meat,in fact), but if you are, you can sign a petition to bring it back to every Taco Bell in the world.

Why so blue, Mrs. Butterworth? Apparently not enough kiddies are eating their daily requirement of syrup: i-Mockery discovered that Ms. Butterworth now comes in anti-freeze blue. Not only that, but he goes the extra mile to try out the mutant syrup for you. He's a brave, brave man. I still can't get myself to even look at the green ketchup.

Yes, my friend, that is a pyramid-shaped watermelon. Remember this when constructing your annual fruit-based Nativity scene. But use the cube-shaped ones when building your annual fruit-based WWII bunker.
