The other night I saw a taco on South Park, and crudely drawn as it was, it set off a craving in me for tacos. Hard shell tacos, which I haven't had in years and years, since Taco Bell had them for 59 cents. Rather than suffer through Taco Bell or even one of the unexceptional Mexican places around here, we hit the grocery store for our very own Taco Night.
It was actually great fun constructing our tacos from spiced up ground beef, colby jack cheese, tomatoes, sour cream, lettuce, and avocados.
Foodgoat reconstructed an old Taco Bell favorite - the Double Decker taco, in which the hard taco shell is inside a soft tortilla, held in place with refried beans. It sounds freaky and unnatural, but it does the Great Flaw of the Hard Taco Shell - one bite sends cracks all over your containment system, and structural integrity is lost. An outer layer of soft tortilla and refried beans, however, keeps it all in prime eating position. Oh, and it tasted pretty good, too.
You have to try the taco's at El Lobo in Painesville. Well worth the trip for you guys.

ReplyDeleteTacos really are the perfect food. You get a little bit of every food group and you can actually eat the vessel that carries the ingredients.
ReplyDeleteI love Taco Bell, but I make tacos at home a ton. I like to use whatever I have leftover for taco salads too.
Kelly, it depends on where your taco bell is located. Here in the mid-west they are HORRIBLE!!!! I shiver whenever I pass a Taco Bell. But, when I lived in CA- I was shocked to find out that Taco Bell wasn't the swill of the world. Then again, if you lived in CA; why would even need to go to a Taco Bell?

If you ever visit Kalamazoo, MI ... IF being the key word ... there's a great taco place called Taco Bob's. Actually I don't know Michigan that well so it might be a chain all throughout the state ... anyway, good and cheap tacos. Delicious.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with ladygoat that finding good Mexican restaurants in Cleveland is difficult--moving here from Nebraska it's been a hard transition
