Our cheese budget has been growing lately. Last week we shelled out over $30 at the cheese stand. But what can we do? We try cheeses, we love them, we must have more. The cheese vendor gives us a slice of a new cheese to try, we love it, we must buy half a pound.That's what happened with the Humboldt Fog, which, according to the cheese guy, is one of the hottest cheeses of the day. Made by Cypress Grove Chevre, the goat cheese was dee-licious, with a tangy, blue cheese-like center surrounded by a more brie-like creaminess. Rich and flavorful, it's definitely a party cheese.
So we bought crackers and had ourselves a party of two.
Sounds delicious. Everyone has to indulge every now and then.

ReplyDeleteI bought Humboldt Fog on a whim at our local cheese shop 2 years ago. Not sure how long it's been around, but what I can tell you is 2 years ago it was about $10.99 a pound and now it's $18.99 a pound!! Seems like it's obviously doing well everywhere! I do live in Brooklyn which over-inflates prices on everything but it's not often enough I can buy this cheese anymore. it is ABSOLUTELY DELISH! the ash that's running through the middle is so freaking tasty! Kudo's to Humboldt Fog for 'making it'!

ReplyDeleteAmy an Jonny - come to Stinky Bklyn! We always have the Fog. As for prices, it's not so much NY inflation as it is that the cheese prices (wholesale) simply continue to go up. I can tell you that the Fog costs the store more than 10.99/lb. If we sold it for that, we'd lose money.
ReplyDeleteGoats - awesome you got to try it! Shame on your cheese supplier though. Not only is $30 a price that exceeds even nyc markup, but from the looks of the photo, they didn't even use a wire to cut it, mangling what is normally a beautiful cheese.
