The Next Doctor!

OF COURSE I have an opinion about the new Doctor!  Who doesn't?  Although I would have loved  Helen Mirren (or any actress, really) as the first female Doctor, I'm increasingly excited about Peter Capaldi.  Here's why:
  • He was good as Caecilius, who David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor meets (along with the pre-Amy Pond Karen Gillian, tee hee!) in ancient Pompeii.
  • He was better as the tragic John Frobisher, the British Home Office Secretary in Torchwood: Children of Earth. (Also tragic in that Doctor Who spinoff mini-series:  Ianto.  WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO IANTO?)
  • He was in a band with Craig Ferguson when they were both in at the Glasgow School of Art.  He sang, Ferguson drummed.   So cute.
  • Doctor Who was his inspiration to become an actor.  As a 14-year-old he wrote “loads of letters” to the show.  A producer eventually sent him a package with a letter, set designs and studio floor plans.  He said in 1998, ”That was a trigger to my ambition to work in TV.”
  • No really, he was a big fan!  At 15, he wrote the following letter to a magazine in response to a feature they did on the show:
May I congratulate you on your excellent Dr Who Special. The articles, photos, and especially the Terry Nation Dalek story with the twist in the tail, were excellent.
The Dalek construction plans will have no doubt inspired many a school to build their own Daleks. Who knows, the country could be invaded by an army of school Daleks! Ah, but we’d be sage, as we’d have Dr Who to protect us!
Your Special has certainly made the year for Dr Who fans. A rather sad year due to the un-timely death of the Master, alias Roger Delgado. But I hope that in 15 years’ time, in 1988, you will publish another Special to celebrate 25 years of wandering in time with the Doctor.
  •  I'm serious, this guy was a fanboy.  He was involved in an epic teenage feud over running the official Doctor Who fan club. And if there anyone I can root for, it's a fanboy.

    Squee!!

What to make for the Doctor Who Christmas special viewing party?  Starting planning ... now.

Happy Birthday Matt Smith!

Why Matt Smith, Mr. 11th Doctor, did I forget it was your birthday on Monday?

Happy 30th birthday!

because everything is better as an animated GIF

I feel a little better that not even the Chin Boy got a Dalek cake for his birthday.  For while I thought about trying to make a Dalek cake.  I have seen some wonderful Dalek cakes that people have made, but I think that for me to attempt it is just a recipe for one epic cake wreck.

Doctor Who, Coming Soon!

Ooooh, the countdown to new Doctor Who begins!

The season officially starts on September 1, but starting on August 27 (next Monday, wheee!) BBC will post five short webisodes of a mini-adventure prequel called Pond Life about our outgoing companions.

I don't really want to say goodbye to the Ponds, especially the Last Centurion.  Maybe Rory could have a food show spinoff.  Here's Arthur Darvill reviewing New York pizza and hot dogs on his first trip to the city:

New Doctor Who Trailer!

Daleks!  Amy!  Even better ... Rory!  Weeping angels!  Lots of Daleks!  River! Dinosaurs! On a space ship!!

We've got BBC America in HD now, so we are all set to watch the new season.  BBC, feel free to start Series 7a of Doctor Who any time now.  I'll get those fish sticks and custards started, because I AM READY.

Happy Birthday David Tennant!

Happy 41st birthday to our very favorite Doctor!

We miss the 10th Doctor.  Really, really miss him.

Now I must content myself with a tumblr of Tennant looking sexy with food.  And with imagining how much better the past few seasons of Doctor Who would have been with him.  Tennant and Rory?  And River?  Would have been awesome.

Fish Sticks and Custard and Doctor Who

We celebrated the premiere of the new Doctor Who season on Saturday with - what else? - fish sticks and custard.

When we first met the 11th Doctor last year, of course, the young Amelia Pond offers a variety of foods to feed his newly regenerated body, but each one - the yogurt, the apple, even the bacon - is rejected, spit out, or deemed evil.  The ultimate and unlikely winner is fish sticks dipped in custard.

Naturally, I didn't have high hopes for how well this would taste, so we went with minimal effort - Van De Kamp's Frozen Crunchy Fish Sticks and Jell-O Instant Pudding in Banana Cream.

But guess what?  It wasn't bad at all.

The fish sticks were nice and crunchy (I don't know why, but I was greatly reassured by the fact that the fish stick instructions said explicitly that microwave cooking is not recommended), and they didn't so far so badly dipped in the sweet, banana cream pudding.  Perhaps not the ideal dipping sauce, but not nearly as weird as I anticipated.  I finished off all the fish sticks this way!

Why does Foodgoat look so sad then?  Maybe it's because he had to watch Doctor Who in standard definition instead of high definition.  Come on, DirecTV, carry BBC America in HD!

Tardis Cookie Jar: So Fun, So Not Fun

And ... we're back!  I bet you didn't even notice we were gone .... wait, what?  It's been almost a year since our last post?  The Doctor promised that he could get us back in time to post the next day!

That Tardis can be a little problematic.

The Tardis can be problematic as a cookie jar too. How fun is it having the Tardis sitting on the counter, full of cookies?  So much fun.

True, it isn't actually bigger on the inside than on the outside, so it doesn't actually hold more cookies.  But the real problem is the Tardis souns it makes when opened.  On the one hand, the sound of the Doctor leaving the brakes on, well, that's just cool.  Not as cool as bowties, but cool.

On the other hand, the fact that the Tardis effectively also  ANNOUNCES TO THE WHOLE HOUSE that Ladygoat is eating cookies AGAIN, well, that's not so cool.  It pretty much shouts out, "Hey, look who has no self control!"
