Fish ... in Sandwiches?

Not so long ago, I had run of eating fish sandwiches. All were variations of breaded fish fillets (it's tilapia in the photo), topped with cheese and mayo and tomatoes and lettuce in some kind of bun.

It sounds so ordinary, doesn't it? Yet fish sandwiches still seem sort of new and weird to me. Where I grew up, my family ate a lot of fish, but not in sandwiches. Nor was fish breaded, or even filleted, for that matter. I don't even think we ate a lot of canned tuna.

No, the fish on the table usually looked not too far from the way the Good God made them - whole, heads on, bones in. And served with a big plate of rice. Just like the Good God intended.

And so, breaded fish sandwich, you'll forgive me if I still look at you askance because you look nothing like a fish. It's not your fault you've been breaded beyond recognition. You still taste good.

  1. I never ate a ton of fish as a kid either. I'm just now starting to eat sushi, which I love, but I still don't like the smell of fish.

My only window into fish sandwiches as a kid was the dreaded McDonald's Filet-o-fish sandwich. As an adult, I would rather die than eat McDonald's but I have had some tasty breaded fish sandwiches.

A fish sandwich sounds good! I have been trying to add more fish and chicken into our diet, this would be a good one to try.

  7. Catfish is excellent in a sandwich. It took me a long time as others have posted to start liking it and I find it's the whitefish I prefer the most.

  8. I am a recent convert to fish sandwiches. I never ate them as a child. I remember my Mom would always order a Fish Filet at McDonald's. While I don't eat the McDonald's variety, I find myself ordering them over a chicken sandwich when the opportunity arises.

A natural combination.... how do you think the idea of Loaves AND Fishes came about?
