San Francisco Dining

Now that the wedding details are in place and my flight to the Bay Area looms, my thoughts are now turning to what to eat the rest of the time that I'm in California.

Foodgoat and I are mourning the loss of Sushi Lovers in Milpitas and vainly trying to recall where the best burritos in the city are.

Otherwise, where to go? where to take our various visitors? I'm perusing the egullet forums for ideas. There are Nation's pies, for one thing. I'd love to go to the notorious farmer's market at the Ferry Building. Shall my adulthood official by having a cocktail at the Top of the Mark? A tour of the Cowgirl Creamery. Perhaps some sake bombs at Mas Sake, the Hooter's of sushi? A visit to the Point Reyes oyster farms. Oooh, an earthquake sundae at Ghiradelli Square? Early on we had in mind to go to the French Laundry, but somehow I think we won't quite make it.

  1. Re: best burritos in the city. Well, here are my votes (by the way, I'm more of a taco gal myself, who needs the rice. . . ).
    1) La Taqueria on Mission (AND they don't put rice in the burritos.)
    2) Taqueria Cancun also on Mission, especially if you get a carnitas burrito, which have a little cinnamon and clove flavor.
    3) Pancho Villa Taqueria on 16th Street. Best salsa and guacamole for the burrito.

    You know that there's the Hog Island Oyster Co. in the Ferry Plaza if you can't make it up to Point Reyes, right?

    I would also go to BiRite Creamery (I hear the lavender honey ice cream is delicious.)

  2. Please let me know if you have empty space in your luggage. I would love to stow-away. I read a report that the TSA only inspects like 10% of all baggage, so I might make it to the yummy eats of San Fran!

    It's a risk I'm willing to take.

  3. Cancun is really, really great, as should be evident from its high Mexican-to-hipster ratio. There's also a Market Street location, in addition to the Mission one.

    Speaking of the Ferry Building (which also has a Cowgirl Creamery stand), I can't say enough good things about the Slanted Door (even if everyone else has already said them). The food is always excellent, and Erik the bar manager is a cocktail genius.

    For wonderful fried chicken (and also excellent cocktails), I recommend FarmerBrown, at Turk & Mason. There is amazing dim sum (Ton Kiang is reliably great, and Yank Sing is out of this world), Korean, Vietnamese (Turtle Tower; two locations), and sushi (Kabuto on Geary! Tsunami off of Divisadero!) pretty much eveywhere you look. Patxi's in Hayes Valley makes a mean deep dish pizza. And Citizen Cake's desserts deserve the constant accolades.

    Overall, the folks on Yelp.com cover the territory pretty well out here. I trust them far more than Citysearch, or even the (more specific, natch) Burritophile.com.

    As aspiring food snobs from Cleveland, who got engaged in Golden Gate Park before moving to S.F. last year, my fiancee and I find a lot to relate to in your blog. Feel free to drop us a line if you'd like any other suggestions: ken@kentertainment.org should work ...

    Taqueria Cancun is big on tofu if i remember right. Could be Pancho Villa, either way, they are both TAS-TEE.

    If you like Ethiopian food and are willing to go to the East Bay, definitely hit up the Addis Restaurant, 6100 Telegraph Ave, Oakland Ca 94609
    510.653.3456. Some amazingly fiiine food there.

  6. in terms of more places to look for san fran eating, two major bloggers out there are chez pim (chezpim.typepad.com/blogs) and becksnposh (becksposhnosh.blogspot.com) . at least, those are the ones i like browsing occasionally. enjoy your trip!

  7. I agree with Jennifer: La Taqueria is really fantasitc, and conveniently located across the street from Vesuvio's-- my fave SF bar.
